Alexis Tsipras, leader of Syriza and candidate for presidency of the European Commission by the Party of the European Left, said last Thursday in Brussels that Europe is caught by the debt that prevents it to develop and go out of the crisis and that the only solution is by reducing the debt and finishing with the austerity.

Throughout the whole day economists, sociologists, trade unionists, politicians of the Party of the European Left (EL) and members of social movements of over 20 different countries analyse the causes and consequences of the policy of austerity and the pressure that the payment of debt is causing on the peoples of Europe. The president of the EL, Pierre Laurent, called this big event "an act of democratic construction" which will open an alternative debate with real solutions. He talked about how to face the debt problem in Europe and "how restructuring it to lighten it".

The right to water and sanitation is a fundamental human right, vital, which should be guaranteed to everyone within public services and not subject to market rules in Europe and around the world. This is not a commercial product but a public good of humanity.

Only a few days after the fiesta of the European People’s Party in Dublin, which "celebrated" both the affirmation of austerity and the political proposals of the European Right, including the cynical jokes made by Bono, the European Left gave its own response.

The Party of the European Left welcomes the victory of Salvador Sánchez Ceren, candidate of the Frente Farabundo Marti de Liberación Nacional in the presidential elections of this March 9. The elections were carried out with all the transparency, and in the presence of a large number of international observers. The EL Party was present in these elections with an observer.

We are experiencing a serious attack against women's rights all over Europe which is developing at different paces in our countries. Financial and political powers are threatening our rights, liberties, and our personal autonomy. More and more, they are limiting women's access to the most basic goods and services and thus preventing to reach the equality among all human beings. The outcome is a greater inequality and a growing lack of democracy in Europe.
