Israeli troops, temporarily having pulled back, leave behind devastation and desolation in Gaza.
The actual military actions of Israel already involved thousands of dead Palestinians, most of them civilians. Men, women and children were hit by shells or were buried in bombed houses, where they had been seeking shelter. Even hospitals and UN-buildings are no secure place of refuge anymore.
Peace was the motto of the 9th edition of the Summer University of the Party of the European Left (EL) in Germany, the place chosen for this international meeting, on the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the World War I and the 75th of World War II. In fact, peace is also one of the six axes of the programmatic platform adopted at the IV EL Congress last December.
September 4-5 there will be a NATO summit in Wales. On the agenda is a demand for all NATO countries to raise military budgets to at least 2% of the GDP. This is the direct preparation for an increased aggressive use of NATO military all over the world and the beginning of a new arms race.
The NATO and its member states cooperate and support other states in preparing and perpetrating wars of aggression.
On Tuesday, the communist group in the Ukrainian Parliament was dissolved by government's decision. The next day, began a totally arbitrary and unjustified lawsuit to ban the Ukrainian communist party.
The Party of the European Left condemns in the strongest terms these acts of repression against a responsible and respectable political party. In fact, its only fault is to be the main left-wing opposition to a government of oligarchs and extreme right, not even democratically elected.
We call on all parties to the conflict to stop armed operations and to avoid further escalation of the situation. We are against repression by the military forces and armed militias. The conflict has to be solved by negotiations and political democratic means, as e.g referenda.
Two weeks after the European elections, the Council of Chairpersons and the Executive Board of the European Left met this weekend in Brussels. It was the occasion to exchange our analysis of the results in the different countries and at European level, to evaluate the campain of the EL, the candidacy of Alexis Tsipras to the Presidency of the European commission and to discuss the necessary political initiatives to take in the coming months.
Since summer 2013, the European Commission is negotiating with the US-administration and the business lobby behind closed doors about the “Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership” (TTIP) . A similar treaty between the EU with Canada, Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), is ready to be ratified soon.
