The Mexican people towards their Fourth Transformation: a reason to feel hopeful about the future of the entire Latin American continent.
The Working Group for Latin America of the Party of the European Left (EL) congratulates Andrés Manuel López Obrador for his victory in the presidential elections held on July 1st.
Undoubtedly, this is a historic triumph, not only because of Lopez Obrador's massive advantage over the right-wing opponents in the elections but also because of the social situation in which Mexico finds itself. This victory of the left is the only possible way out of the serious socio-economic, political problems and destruction of democracy in which the Mexican people are immersed.
We know that the new President will face fierce opposition, whose first act begins in this period of transition until the official inauguration of his presidency next December 1st. Predictably, the right-wing reactionary block (transnational corporations, mega-billionaires, hegemonic media, corrupt opportunists of government structures, paramilitary mafias, etc.) that for decades has dominated the Mexican political scene, will now try to put an end to the dream of total regeneration desired by the Mexican people electing the leftist candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador as President.
EL considers that this overwhelming victory of the left is an evident democratic reaction of the Mexican people. The influence of this result will go beyond the borders of the country. López Obrador has reiterated on several occasions that he intends to transcend history as the leader of the Fourth Mexican Transformation, after the Independence, the Reformation and the Mexican Revolution. In the same way that those three transformations illuminated the path of many Latin American countries, we are convinced that this fourth would give an enormous boost to all of Latin America in its struggle against the reactionary forces that currently swarm in many governments and institutions of the continent.
There are many commitments that the new president has assumed in his campaign. All of them of key importance to achieve a new Social State. In this Working Group of the EL we are very pleased that the core and axis of all these commitments assumed are in the democratization of society in all its areas. In particular, we highlight the aspect of placing one of the main focuses in the catastrophic situation in which the peasantry and indigenous populations are immersed.
For all these reasons, the Party of the European Left reiterates its congratulations to López Obrador and assures him that he will have our full support, so that he can successfully meet the goals and objectives he assumes with his mandate.
